Placentia - St. Mary’s Area Receives Job Creation Partnership Funding

With a Provincial Government contribution of $244,573 through the Job Creation Partnership program, 20 individuals will gain valuable work experience from three Job Creation Partnership projects in the Placentia - St. Mary’s area.

Through the projects, eight individuals will assist the Town of St. Brides with the removal of insulation from walls and ceilings and general clean up of the site surrounding the community centre; eight workers will help market the Festival of Flags in Placentia; and four individuals will help the Father Val Power Learning Centre Complex in Riverhead provide a greenhouse area for starting plants, construct small production areas for growing, and maintain an agricultural library.

"Today’s announcement will ensure the project sponsors have the necessary financial resources to hire individuals and undertake priorities in the Placentia - St. Mary’s area,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. “By partnering with the Provincial Government, each organization has the means to accomplish their goals, while producing employment opportunities for 20 individuals."

Job Creation Partnership program funding is provided through direct contributions to sponsors or through the extension of Employment Insurance benefits for project participants and may include in-kind or in-cash contributions from sponsors. Examples of potential partnership initiatives include maintenance and repairs to community infrastructure, such as town halls and churches, the beautification of public areas, and funding to support local events.

“I am extremely pleased that the Provincial Government has provided funding for these projects,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s. “All of these initiatives will provide important opportunities for ensuring the long-term sustainability of our rural communities and provide an excellent way of including local residents in the cultural, social and economic viability of the region.”

In November 2009, responsibility for Labour Market Development Agreement programs and services, including the Job Creation Partnership program, transferred from the Federal Government to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since that time, the Provincial Government has delivered approximately 475 projects with a total value of nearly $22 million, providing employment for over 2,250 individuals.
