2011 Open Farm Day Host Farm Participation

The Department of Natural Resources – Agrifoods Branch would like to inform you of the upcoming Open Farm Day event in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and the opportunity it presents to increase the awareness of your farm and products as well as the Newfoundland and Labrador agricultural industry.

Open Farm Day is an Atlantic province-wide initiative designed to raise awareness of the agriculture industry in this region. The event provides the general public with an opportunity to visit local farms to discover where their food comes from, meet the people who produce it and enjoy a family fun-filled day on the farm, whether it be taking a tour on a hay wagon, eating local sweet corn, riding a horse or harvesting fresh vegetables. In addition, Open Farm Day provides farmers with an opportunity to meet consumers and educate them on producing fresh, quality food as well as increase sales and the potential of gaining long-term customers.

Because of the amount of expressed interest thus far, its potential benefits and past successes, Open Farm Day is being re-established in Newfoundland and Labrador and will occur on September 18th, 2011.

To become a 2011 Open Farm Day participant, please phone  637-2086 or email for a registration form. This form must be returned no later than July 15th 2011. The farms who have returned their information by this deadline will be listed and highlighted in a map that will be distributed to all Sobeys stores in the province as well as agricultural festivals and events.
